Ivan Gil, Information Security Officer, CISSP, CEH, GIAC

Ivan joined SLAIT as an Enterprise Security Architect, bringing a bold vision, coupled with a diverse set of skills – a combination of his experience in the US Army, Northrup Grumman and operational excellence on leading projects supporting the security infrastructure organization for the Virginia Information Technology Agency.

He is responsible for advising new and existing customers on Information Security and Regulatory Compliance. He acts as a Virtual Information Security Officer for multiple clients; assisting them with their Information Security programs. Responsibilities include developing and review of Information Security Policies and performing compliance assessments for our clients in order to meet their specific regulatory requirements. His team is responsible for performing risk assessments and gap analysis, conducting vulnerability scans (internal/external), penetration testing, audit preparation assistance, and security organization review.

Experience/Leadership: As a transformational leader with proven security expertise and deep technical knowledge, Ivan has a proven record of success providing vision and direction in the design, implementation, administration, and support of large-scale technology infrastructures.  Extensive technical knowledge and experience to lead IT departments, define standard procedures, train and mentor personnel and analyze business processes. A cyber security professional capable of developing network security, risk management, and compliance policies for large scale organizations. Highly accomplished leader and innovative educator with a demonstrated ability to relay complex technical concepts.

Ivan is a founding member of the board of directors for the local (ISC)2 Richmond Metro Chapter. In his role as founding treasurer, Ivan helped establish the chapter during the first two years and as acting President in the third year he filled in for the founding president. During the past year, Ivan has served as the president of the chapter and has provided continuity on the board.

Christopher Schurman, CISSP, GWAPT, CEH, ITILv3

Chris Schurman is a founding member of the board of directors for the local (ISC)2 Richmond Metro Chapter. In his role as founding secretary, Chris helped establish the chapter and as Vice President has provided continuity on the board.

In addition to his role with the local (ISC)2 chapter, Chris is a devoted husband and proud father of three incredible children. In his spare time, he has volunteered for the last 5 years as a technical mentor with the Air Force Associations CyberPatriot Program where he helps develop the next generation of cyber security professionals. Chris is also on the IT advisory committees for ECPI; John Tyler Community College's Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA); and Chesterfield County Public Schools Career and Technical Centers “Cisco Networking Academy”.

Chris holds a Bachelor’s degree from Strayer University and an Associate’s degree from ECPI Technical College. He also holds more than 10 industry recognized certifications. Among the most recent are the SANS GIAC Web Application Penetration Tester GIAC Web Application Penetration Tester (GWAPT), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

Last, but certainly not least, Chris is a veteran of the US Navy where he spent 4 years on active duty and developed his interest in Information Technology.

 Michael Stapleton, CISSP, SEC+, NET+, ITILV3 

Michael Stapleton, has worked in Information Technology for the past 20 years primarly as  a DoD contractor.  Is currently working as a Senior Cybersecurity Engineer for Office of Personnel Management (OPM).  Previous to this I served as an Information System Security Manager (ISSM) for the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) performing Risk Management Framework Assessment & Authorizations on three of DCMA's systems. 

Assessed seven Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) systems while working on a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contract.  Served the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as a Knowledge Engineer and a Cyber Event Coordinator.

Supported Military Sealift Command (MSC) for thirteen years in the following roles: Configuration Management, Help Desk Management, Project Management, Information Assurance and was Department Manager for Vulnerability and Patch Management.  

Retired US Navy Submarine Radioman after serving 20 years, 9 months. 

James A. Walters, CISSP, CISM, CISA, CRISC, CEH, ITILv3, Security+

James Walters is a technologist with over 20 years’ experience. James is currently the Information System Security Engineer and Security Architect for Chesterfield County IT.  Previous to this role James worked at Northrop Grumman Corporation as an Enterprise Services Operation Manager supporting managed IT services for the Virginia Information Technologies Agency and the Virginia executive branch agencies.

James is well-versed in cybersecurity, networking, systems administration and field services operations. He has held increasingly higher information technology roles in support of commercial, state and local government customers.

James' experience includes certifications and training from vendors such as; Cisco, CompTIA, DRII, Dell, EMC, EXIN, HDI, HP, ITIL, ISACA, ISC2, Microsoft and VMware. James completed information security management training from the University of California, Irvine in 2012.

James has been involved with CompTIA as a subject matter expert since 2016 for both the CompTIA Security+ and CyberSecurity Analyst+ exams. James maintains the A+, Network+, Server+, Security+ and Project+ CompTIA certifications.

James spends his time outside of work training and studying the latest technologies and occasionally visits Disney World.
